Newy 87.8 FM – Newcastle Art Gallery will host Muse, a world-first exhibition surveying 20 years of work by globally recognised Newcastle-based artist Angela Tiatia, from 26 September 2026 to 7 February 2027.
Featuring video, photography and installation, the ticketed exhibition brings together the Sāmoan/Australian artist's most significant works from public and private collections across Australia, exploring themes of climate, capitalism and colonisation.
Gallery Director Lauretta Morton OAM said Tiatia is "one of the most vital voices in contemporary Australian art", and the gallery is proud to present the first major survey of her career in the city she now calls home.
Works on display include Hibiscus rosa sinensis, 2010, The pearl, 2021, commissioned by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and Narcissus, 2019, which uses a cast of 40 to reimagine the Greco-Roman myth as a reflection on selfie culture.
The gallery will also present the first showing of The Matildas, 2025, outside the National Portrait Gallery. The 23-minute video portrait, filmed across three continents, five cities and seven shoots, captures all 23 players from the CommBank Matildas FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 squad, including Newcastle's Emily van Egmond and Clare Wheeler. Entry to The Matildas is free to the public.
The exhibition opens alongside City of Newcastle's multi-arts festival New Annual, running from 25 September to 4 October 2026, with the full program to be unveiled on Friday 31 July.
