Privacy policyUpdated 3 September 2026
Newy 87.8 FM is published by Scrambled Eggs Media Pty Ltd, Newcastle NSW. We collect as little as a news site can, and we handle what we do collect in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). This page says what that means in practice.
The short version
- Reading the site or listening to the stream does not require an account, and we don’t run advertising trackers or analytics.
- The only personal information we ask for is what you choose to put in a tip. Name and contact details are optional.
- We never publish who told us something. Protecting sources is how a newsroom works.
- Your theme choice (light or dark) is stored in your own browser and never sent to us.
What we collect, and why
When you send a tip
The tip itself, the suburb if you give one, and — only if you choose to leave them — your name and a phone number or email. We use these to check the story and, if you left a way to reach you, to ask a follow-up question. We don’t use them for anything else, and we don’t add you to a list.
To stop the tip line being flooded by automated spam, we also keep a one-way fingerprint of the network address the tip came from. It is a scrambled code, not an address; it cannot be turned back into one, and we use it only to notice when the same sender is posting many tips in a short time.
When you use the site
Our hosting provider (Amazon Web Services, in its Sydney region) keeps standard server logs — the address a request came from, the page asked for, the time and the browser type — for a short period, for security and to keep the site running. We don’t use them to identify or profile readers.
If you switch the site between light and dark, that preference is saved in your browser’s local storage. It stays on your device and is never sent to us.
The tip form may use Cloudflare Turnstile to tell people from bots. When it is on, Cloudflare processes some technical signals from your browser to make that call, under Cloudflare’s privacy policy. It doesn’t ask you to solve puzzles and doesn’t track you across other sites.
When you listen live
The stream is delivered by our streaming provider. Connecting to it shares your network address with that provider in the ordinary way any internet connection does. We see how many people are listening, not who.
What we don’t do
No advertising cookies, no third-party analytics, no social-media pixels, no selling or renting of anyone’s information. If that ever changes, this page will change first.
Who we share information with
Only the service providers that run the site for us — our hosting, database and streaming providers, and Cloudflare for the bot check — and only to the extent they need it to provide the service. We will disclose information if the law requires us to, or to protect someone from serious harm. We will not reveal a source to anyone, and we will resist any attempt to make us.
Some providers store data outside Australia. Our hosting and database are in Sydney; Cloudflare operates globally. Where information leaves the country, we take reasonable steps to ensure it is handled in line with the Australian Privacy Principles.
How long we keep it
A tip that becomes a story is kept with the story’s records. A tip that doesn’t is kept only as long as it is useful to the newsroom, then deleted. Server logs are kept for a short, rolling period.
Your rights
You can ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, by emailing newsroom@joshy.net. We will respond within a reasonable time, usually within 30 days. We may need to confirm who you are before acting on a request. If you sent a tip anonymously we won’t be able to find it from your details — which is rather the point.
Children
The site is intended for a general audience. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If you think a child has sent us their details, contact us and we will remove them.
Complaints
If you think we have mishandled your information, tell us first at newsroom@joshy.net and we will look into it and reply. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
Changes
We will update this policy when what we do changes. The date at the top says when that last happened. Our terms of use sit alongside this policy.
