Newy 87.8 FM is a community radio station and local news service for Newcastle and the Hunter, published by Scrambled Eggs Media Pty Ltd. The newsroom’s job is simple to say and hard to do: Newcastle news, first — and right.
How we report
We work from primary sources. A story starts with the organisation that knows: NSW Police, the Rural Fire Service, Transport for NSW, the Bureau of Meteorology, the councils, the courts, the health districts, the clubs and the companies involved. We read what they publish, we check it against what else we know, and we write it for people who live here.
What other outlets report is a lead, never a source. If the Herald or the ABC has a story we don’t, we go and find it ourselves or we don’t run it. The same goes for tips from readers: every tip is a question to answer, not a fact to print.
Every story names its sources at the foot of the page. If it doesn’t say where it came from, we haven’t published it.
Where we use AI, and where we don’t
Our desk is largely automated. Software reads the primary sources around the clock, decides what is local and newsworthy, drafts the story in plain English, and checks the draft against the source before anything is stored — a claim that isn’t in the source doesn’t survive. Stories that clear every check are published by the desk under the byline Newy Newsroom, and say so at the foot of the page.
Anything sensitive is held for a person. Deaths, crime involving named people, court matters, self-harm, children, and anything the software is less than certain about are queued for human approval and are never published automatically. Stories about suicide or mental health carry support-line information as a matter of policy.
A story with a person’s name on it was written or substantially reworked by that person. We do not use AI to invent quotes, to write about things that have not happened, or to imitate anyone’s voice. The weather brief is generated from the Bureau’s own numbers and says nothing the Bureau didn’t.
Corrections
We get things wrong, and when we do we fix them fast and say so. A corrected story is updated in place, and where the error was material we note the correction on the story. A story that should not have run is withdrawn, not quietly edited.

Rights and reuse
We publish what we are entitled to publish. Media releases and public notices from governments, agencies and organisations are rewritten in our own words with the source named. We do not republish other publishers’ journalism. Photographs are the station’s own, supplied by the source, or generated section art, and are credited where a credit is due.
Our headlines and standfirsts are available as an RSS feed for aggregators, apps and other newsrooms, with a link back to the story. Bulk or commercial reuse needs our written permission — see the terms of use.
