Newy 87.8 FM – Passengers on the Central Coast Newcastle Line are advised to allow extra travel time this afternoon, with residual delays continuing after overhead wiring repairs at Chatswood.
Transport for NSW says Sydney Trains services on the T1 North Shore Line have resumed, but travellers on the T1 North Shore and Central Coast Newcastle Line may continue to experience delays and flow-on impacts as trains and crew are repositioned and the timetable is restored across the network.
The incident occurred just after 8:30pm on Monday when a cable in the overhead wiring tension system failed between Chatswood and Artarmon, causing counterweights to drop and overhead wires to fall to the ground.
Trains were unable to operate through the affected section and replacement transport arrangements were put in place. Replacement buses ran between Gordon and Chatswood, a limited train service operated between Hornsby and Gordon, and passengers were encouraged to use Sydney Metro services.
Two trains, carrying 12 and 10 passengers respectively, were safely evacuated so crews could access the affected area. The evacuation of all 22 passengers was completed without incident.
Engineering crews worked through the night and the morning peak on repairs, followed by extensive safety testing before services progressively resumed. The infrastructure had been inspected during routine maintenance in recent months, and a detailed investigation will now determine the cause of the failure.
