First three roof sections complete in Christ Church Cathedral restoration

Newy 87.8 FM – A major restoration at Newcastle's Christ Church Cathedral is progressing well, with the first three sections of external roof works now complete.

Anglican Bishop of Newcastle Dr Peter Stuart joined representatives from construction company Duratec on Wednesday to mark the milestone.

"For many of us involved in this project – myself included – this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be so closely involved with work on a building of this significance to our community," Bishop Peter said.

"Three of the roofs have been completed. Work is on track and we are excited to see the project progressing."

The cathedral has been the religious, spiritual and cultural heart of Newcastle for 175 years.

To celebrate the project's progress, a new trefoil cross will be installed in the near future, weather permitting. The cross represents the Holy Trinity and, once installed, will be part of Newcastle's skyline for generations to come.

Bishop Peter said the cross was a remarkable example of the craftsmanship being used throughout the restoration.

"The redevelopment of the cross showcases the commitment we have to ensuring the restoration is like-for-like and meets Heritage NSW requirements," he said.

"Situated on top of the Warriors' Chapel, it will be a great memorial to those who fought in the First World War."
