City of Newcastle brings beloved children's stories to life these school holidays

Newy 87.8 FM – City of Newcastle is bringing beloved books and television icons to life these school holidays, with a program of free and ticketed activities spanning stories, art, science and technology.

Children can step into Julia Donaldson's Room on the Broom with a wand-making workshop at Newcastle City Library on 8 July, ahead of a live adaptation at the Civic Theatre later this month. The Rainbow Sheep Colour Party, also at Newcastle City Library on Wednesday 8 July, will celebrate Mem Fox's Where is the Green Sheep? with storytime, sensory activities and a chance to meet cast members from Monkey Baa Theatre's upcoming Civic Theatre production.

Newcastle Museum's free exhibition Mr Squiggle and Friends: The Creative World of Norman Hetherington will be accompanied by squiggle-inspired activities, while workshops at Newcastle Art Gallery will respond to the Brian Robinson: Multiverse exhibition, including LEGO Printmaking from 7 to 10 July and Blooms in the Multiverse from 14 to 17 July.

NAIDOC Week activities include an illustration workshop with First Nations storyteller Dub Leffler on 8 July, flag-inspired jewellery making at Wallsend Library on 10 July, and stringybark rope making with Uncle Amos Simon on 9 July.

Free STEM workshops run at Wallsend Library from 13 to 16 July, while high school students can join free Bike School riding workshops from Tighes Hill TAFE on 12 and 19 July.
