Newy 87.8 FM – Newcastle-born midfielder Connor Metcalfe has scored Australia's second goal in the Socceroos' opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 against Türkiye, a 2-0 win.
The 26-year-old, who wears the No. 8 jersey, is a junior product of South Cardiff FC in Lake Macquarie and also played junior football at Valentine FC, spending his junior years developing in Newcastle.
Metcalfe represented Northern NSW Football at the under-13 boys National Youth Championships in 2011, according to a feature published by the governing body.
He joined the Melbourne City academy in 2014 after growing up in Newcastle and made more than 70 appearances for the club before moving to German side FC St Pauli in 2022.
Metcalfe made his Socceroos debut against Chinese Taipei on 7 June 2021 as Australia's 611th capped player. His Football Australia profile lists 40 appearances and two goals, with the AFC Asian Cup 2023 and FIFA World Cup 2026 among his major tournaments.
Northern NSW Football says Metcalfe maintains ties to the region, and both the governing body and South Cardiff FC publicly celebrated the goal. Mark Taylor, Metcalfe's under-10s coach at South Cardiff and Macquarie Football, was among those to reflect on his journey in the NNSWF feature.
