Hamilton Station Park to host Hawker Street Markets after $290,000 upgrade(newcastle council)
Newy 87.8 FM – Hamilton Station Park has reopened to the community following the completion of a $290,000 upgrade by City of Newcastle, with the park set to host the Hawker Street Markets for the first time this September.
Visitors were welcomed back to the park with improvements including new accessible seating, landscaping work, a weather-proof purpose-built donation cupboard and a community notice board.
Ward Two Councillor Jenny Barrie said the project was designed to improve the park's functionality, accessibility and safety, with an improved electrical supply allowing for a security light and colour-changeable ambient lighting on garden bollards.
Councillor Paige Johnson said the works delivered a new kerb ramp, pathway upgrades and accessible modular seating with handrails, along with an all-weather gravel pathway around the park's Moreton Bay fig made from 100 per cent recycled permeable material. A surface garden beneath the fig will protect the tree's root system.
A Welcome to Place sign featuring artwork by local Indigenous artist Koan Cashman will invite visitors to learn about the historical and ongoing relationship of Traditional Custodians with the space, Councillor Joel Pringle said.
Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp said the park acts as a gateway for train passengers heading to Beaumont Street and the Hamilton business precinct.
The Hamilton Business Improvement Association will host the Hawker Markets in the park on September 12, featuring street food, outdoor dining, face painting, live music and roving entertainment.
