HMRI targets $100,000 for women's health research on national giving day

Newy 87.8 FM – The Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) will join Australia's first-ever Medical Research Giving Day on Wednesday 9 September 2026, aiming to raise $100,000 for women's health research in the Hunter New England region.

The national campaign will bring together more than 30 medical research institutes from across Australia to support research that improves and saves lives.

HMRI says every dollar donated through the institute will stay in the Hunter New England region.

The focus on women's health comes from HMRI's Health Pulse community consultation, in which almost 1,000 women across the region shared the health challenges affecting them and their families.

HMRI researchers are already working on many of the issues local women raised, including healthy ageing and dementia, mental health, domestic violence prevention, menopause and reproductive health.

HMRI Institute Director and CEO Professor Frances Kay said the day recognises the role supporters play in making medical breakthroughs possible.

"Every Australian will be touched by disease at some point in their lives. The treatments we rely on today exist because communities chose to support medical research," Professor Kay said.

"Medical Research Giving Day creates a national moment for Australians to come together and help drive the next generation of discoveries."

Workplaces, community groups, schools and sporting clubs are encouraged to get involved, including by hosting a Purple Morning Tea, where participants wear purple, donate and share a plate in support of women's health research.
