Newy 87.8 FM – The Hunter Joint Organisation has met with NSW Minister for Resources Courtney Houssos to push for a greater share of coal mining royalties to be invested back into the region.
Coal mining royalties contribute more than $3 billion every year to the NSW economy. With global coal demand changing, the organisation is advocating for more of that investment to support communities that have helped power the state's economy for generations.
The discussion focused on practical opportunities to accelerate economic diversification. These included increasing the NSW Future Jobs Investment Fund to $150 million per year to support regional transition, and investing mining royalties into catalytic projects that create new industries and jobs.
Pathways to address challenges with passing the Future Jobs Investment Bill were also raised, along with progressing the implementation of the NSW Parliament's Inquiry recommendations into Beneficial and Productive Post-Mining Land Use.
The meeting also covered the importance of stronger collaboration and regular engagement between the NSW Government and Hunter councils, ensuring local government has the information and partnerships needed to help deliver the region's economic transformation.
More than 800,000 people call the Hunter home. The Hunter Joint Organisation said it looks forward to continuing to work with the NSW Government to build a more diverse, resilient and prosperous future for the region.
