Newy 87.8 FM – The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle will commemorate its Perpetual Day of Remembrance on Sunday 13 September 2026, with observances held across the Diocese.
The day is a public acknowledgement of the harm caused by the Church in the past, particularly the pain and suffering endured by survivors of abuse, their families and those who have been lost.
The Diocese says the occasion is a chance to re-commit to remembering what happened so those things are not allowed to be repeated.
It is described as an opportunity for the whole faith community to come together in prayer and remembrance, honouring survivors, acknowledging the wrongs of the past and renewing a commitment to building a Church that is safe for all.
As part of the commemoration, Sacred Heart Cathedral is being lit up for the week leading into the Perpetual Day of Remembrance, serving as a visible sign of solidarity and remembrance for all who have been impacted.
