Almost 100 young people begin Maitland-Newcastle World Youth Day journey

Newy 87.8 FM – Almost 100 young people gathered last Tuesday night to learn about the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle's pilgrimage to World Youth Day 2027 in South Korea.
The diocese says the evening marked the beginning of a journey it hopes will see young people grow in faith, build new friendships and encounter the universal Church.
At this stage, attendees are not being asked to make a final commitment. Instead, the diocese is inviting them to consider the possibility of taking part.
Over the coming months, prospective pilgrims will discern the opportunity and make an expression of interest. Registration will formally open by November, with an $800 non-refundable deposit required.
Local fundraising will then begin, and by April next year an expected 60 to 70 pilgrims will gather for formation and community building ahead of the trip.
The diocese says its hope is that pilgrims return home having encountered Christ more deeply, formed enduring friendships and discovered the beauty of belonging to a Church that spans every nation, culture and language.
While World Youth Day 2027 is still some time away, the diocese says the pilgrimage has already begun, with excitement in the air and plans beginning to take shape.
