Newy 87.8 FM – Planning work is ramping up for the new westbound flyover at the Cessnock Road and New England Highway roundabout at Maitland, with geotechnical and survey investigations beginning from Monday 31 August.
The Federal Government is fully funding the $100 million upgrade, which aims to cut congestion at the roundabout. An eastbound flyover is already in place, and the project will deliver a westbound flyover to improve travel for motorists, freight movement and housing growth along the Maitland to Cessnock corridor.
Transport for NSW will carry out the investigations on and around the New England Highway at the Cessnock Road roundabout for up to three months, weather permitting. The work includes detailed surveys of the road surface, road corridor and drainage, locating existing underground services, and using machinery to investigate geotechnical conditions.
Work will take place between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, with some night work where required between 6pm and 6am, Sunday to Thursday. No work will be carried out on public holidays.
Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said the investigations were "a critical first step to inform the future design of the proposed westbound flyover which will help confirm costs of the project as it progresses".
NSW Roads Minister and State Member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison said the upgrade would "improve traffic flow and help reduce congestion at one of Maitland's busiest intersections".
Transport for NSW says it will keep the community informed and consult with key stakeholders as planning continues.
