Newy 87.8 FM – The Mothers' Union is celebrating 150 years of compassion, with Newcastle president Elizabeth Bissaker encouraging community spirit for generations to come.
The organisation began in England when founder Mary Sumner moved to a new parish with young children and, not knowing anyone, invited a group of women to the rectory. That gathering became the beginning of the Mothers' Union, which quickly spread across the world.
"At its heart, Mothers' Union is about thinking about families — supporting them, praying for them, and helping people in times of adversity," Ms Bissaker said.
The group aims to create safe spaces within communities, with a 2026 vision of "serving others and nurturing ourselves".
"As the years have gone by, Mothers' Union has adapted while keeping the same core purpose," Ms Bissaker said. "Sometimes people think Mothers' Union just makes the tea and sandwiches — but it's much more than that."
Women from across the diocese came together for Lady Day, the Mothers' Union's annual service, held at St Mary's Maitland. The service, led by Bishop Sonia, included the commissioning of the Mothers' Union executive team and committee members in acknowledgement of their community contributions.
"We would love more people to join. It's about supporting families and being part of a community that cares," Ms Bissaker said.
