Newy 87.8 FM – Seven new works never seen before will make their national debut in Newcastle as the New Annual festival launches into 10 days of art, music and ideas.
The sixth edition of City of Newcastle's flagship arts festival runs from 25 September to 4 October, featuring 402 artists across 40 events, with a mix of free and low-cost ticketed performances.
Newcastle artist Izabela Pluta and local dance company Catapult unveiled their commissioned works at the Canoe Pool. Pluta's installation, Cavitation: Breathing Ocean, uses sea floats collected from Far North Queensland coastlines and is accompanied by an exhibition at The Lock-Up.
Catapult will perform At Sea, a new 30-minute work at the water's edge each morning at 8am, set to an original score by Zackari Watt and followed by a public dance workshop.
A third new work, Petite Suite by Sydney arts organisation Brand X, will transform Cooks Hill's Oriental Hotel into an immersive performance space. The experience is already sold out.
Laman Street will be closed to traffic on Friday 25 September for the free First Night Art Party featuring Aleksiah, Djanaba and Ngaiire, while Angela Tiatia launches her exhibition Muse at Newcastle Art Gallery.
The free SOAK sunset music sessions return to Newcastle Ocean Baths, with Hermitude and Newcastle DJ Claire O'Brien on 26 September, followed by a jazz night on 27 September.
