Newy 87.8 FM – Newcastle Anglican has launched its inaugural Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), committing to stronger relationships, deeper understanding and greater opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across its Diocese and organisation.

The organisation says the plan is the beginning of a long-term journey to deepen relationships, amplify First Nations voices, promote truth-telling and create meaningful change across Newcastle Anglican.

Newcastle Anglican acknowledges the traditional custodianship of the First Nations of the land on which the Diocese ministers — the Awabakal, Biripi, Darkinyung, Geawegal, Kamilaroi, Worimi, Garrigal, Dunghutti and Wonnarua peoples. That land stretches from the Hawkesbury River to Lake Cathie, and from the coast to beyond the Burning Mountain.

The Diocese says it honours the enduring connection of those peoples to Country, culture, community and spirituality, and recognises the histories, knowledge and traditions they continue to share.

Its stated vision is to acknowledge the past, embrace truth-telling and accept the invitation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to walk together on a journey of collective healing.

Newcastle Anglican says it seeks a future where the voices, cultures, histories and aspirations of First Nations peoples are respected, celebrated and reflected in the life of its parishes, agencies, schools and communities.

The organisation aspires to be culturally safe, where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples feel valued, heard and empowered, and where genuine partnerships create opportunities for all people to flourish.
