City of Newcastle holds Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 25 August(newcastle council)
Newy 87.8 FM – City of Newcastle councillors have unanimously endorsed the Cultural Plan 2026–2036 at Tuesday's Ordinary Council meeting on 28 July, providing the city with a clear, coordinated and long-term approach to culture.
Council also unanimously supported an initial 12-month pilot of free period products in a selection of City of Newcastle buildings, and will write to the State Members for Newcastle, Wallsend and Charlestown asking them to advocate to the NSW Government for a coordinated response to period poverty.
A Lord Mayoral Minute was unanimously endorsed to commission independent advice on the impacts of the current local government funding system, including cost shifting, on City of Newcastle's finances.
Councillors received a petition calling for accessibility and safety upgrades to pedestrian footpaths and roads in Islington, referring it to the Chief Executive Officer for consideration.
Council requested a report from the CEO considering advice in the Hamilton Community Safety Audit report, identifying which recommendations can be delivered within current policy and project frameworks, including timeframes.
Councillors acknowledged Hunter Wildlife Rescue volunteers and congratulated them on the release of 70 flying foxes for the 2025/2026 season, noting Blackbutt Reserve's role as a final release location.
Council also formally welcomed the NSW Labor Government's $12 billion commitment to return train manufacturing to the Hunter, pledging to work collaboratively with neighbouring councils, industry and the NSW Government.
