Newy 87.8 FM – Upgraded playing surfaces, improved lighting and modern amenities have been identified as key priorities for City of Newcastle's sporting infrastructure, following early consultation on the updated Strategic Sports Plan.
More than 1,600 survey responses were received, with associations, clubs and community members providing feedback on their use of sporting fields, courts and facilities.
City of Newcastle's Executive Manager Community and Recreation Lynn Duffy said the feedback will guide investment and management of sports facilities across the local government area.
"Improving the availability and quality of facilities was consistently highlighted as the best way to help clubs welcome more participants and expand their programs," Ms Duffy said.
Ms Duffy said drainage and lighting limit how reliably fields can be used, while ageing amenities limit female, accessible and inclusive participation. Some 88% of respondents indicated they use facilities for casual recreation and exercise.
The 10-year plan was adopted by the elected Council in 2020, but shifting participation trends, population growth, climate impacts and competing demands for usable land prompted a review. Ms Duffy said growth in the western suburbs and future planning proposals around the Broadmeadow Place Strategy must also be considered.
A community briefing held last night provided an update on the engagement results, proposed strategic priorities and next steps.
The draft plan is expected to be placed on public exhibition later this month before being refined and put to the elected Council for adoption.
