Newy 87.8 FM – NSW Police have launched a high-visibility operation to support safe celebrations across Newcastle and the Hunter for this Sunday's NRL Grand Final.

The operation will focus on key locations including the live site at McDonald Jones Stadium, the Newcastle CBD and licensed premises throughout the city and surrounding entertainment precincts.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District will be supported by specialist resources including Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Northern Region support resources, the Public Order and Riot Squad, Police Transport Command and Marine Area Command.

Newcastle City Police District Commander, Acting Superintendent Kristin Marshall, said there would be a strong and visible police presence across the city, at live sites and around licensed venues throughout the day and into the night.

"Our message is simple: have fun, celebrate safely and respect those around you," Acting Superintendent Marshall said.

Newcastle-Hunter Sector Highway Patrol Chief Inspector Barnes urged people who plan to drink to organise a safe way home before going out, and warned drivers to expect more pedestrians around entertainment precincts, licensed venues and town centres over the weekend.

Police are encouraging people attending live sites, licensed venues or other Grand Final events to plan ahead and consider travel arrangements before leaving home. Public transport information is available via the Transport for NSW website, and traffic updates at livetraffic.com.

Anyone requiring emergency assistance should call Triple Zero (000). For non-urgent police assistance, contact the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
