Newy 87.8 FM – Work is underway to replace Teralba's eastern bridge on Racecourse Road, with the ageing crossing set to be rebuilt due to its poor structural condition.
Bridge 263, which crosses the creek east of Teralba Bowling Club, will be replaced with a new bridge designed to safely support heavy vehicles, provide unrestricted two-way traffic flow and improve long-term road safety.
A new shared pathway, including a boardwalk across the creek, and associated roadworks will also improve safety at the Blair Street and York Street intersection.
The $7.6 million project is jointly funded, with $5 million from the Albanese Government's Safer Local Roads Infrastructure Program and $2.6 million from Lake Macquarie City Council.
The bridge will be closed for a short period while a temporary single-lane crossing is established. The full replacement is expected to take about 12 months.
Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain said bridges are critical access points in and out of regional communities, and the $5 million investment would improve the safety and reliability of the local road link.
Federal Member for Hunter Dan Repacholi said the upgrades would create a safer and stronger route for local commuters and freight operators.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said replacing ageing transport infrastructure was an important part of keeping the community safe on the roads.
