Newy 87.8 FM – The J&H Commercial Ladies Day Cup, the feature on the second day of Newcastle Jockey Club's Spring Carnival on Saturday, has attracted a capacity field.
The Matthew Smith-trained Silencio Porfavor is the $4.20 favourite on TAB after two recent Metro placings and a close second at Wyong on September 4. Apprentice Izzy Neale, who claims 3kg, rode the gelding at Wyong and retains the mount on Saturday.
The five-year-old bolted in by 3.5 lengths on the Newcastle track in June, and two of his three wins have come on Good 4 rated tracks.
In the opening event, the 900m Klosters Midway Maiden Plate, three-year-old filly Excelluna ($2.10 favourite) resumes from a spell wearing blinkers for the first time. Keagan Latham rides for Richard and Will Freedman.
Chris Waller sends promising colt Klocke ($1.60 favourite) to Newcastle first-up in the 1250m Pukura Super Maiden Plate. The son of Zoustar has been beaten a head and a nose in his only two starts, and Lee Magorian takes the ride.
Michael Freedman's filly Esnaad ($12), placed in both career starts, contests the 1250m Pro Torque Fillies and Mares Maiden with Latham aboard.
Arrowfield-trained stayer Joika ($3.30 favourite), a 3.5-length Scone winner on September 1, will be ridden by Aaron Bullock in the 2300m Gateshead Traffic Solutions Benchmark 64 Handicap.
