Newy 87.8 FM – University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Alex Zelinsky AO will retire in February 2027, the university announced on 7 October 2026.
Chancellor Patricia Forsythe AM made the announcement to staff and students on the morning of 7 October 2026.
Professor Zelinsky commenced as the university's eighth Vice-Chancellor and President on 19 November 2018. By February 2027, his tenure will be roughly eight years and three months.
He will continue in the role until February 2027, which the university says is to ensure continuity of leadership. The university credits Professor Zelinsky's tenure with introducing work placements across all undergraduate degrees, the $280 million Trailblazer for Recycling and Clean Energy (TRaCE) program, and the Integrated Innovation Network (i2N).
It also pointed to facilities at Gosford Central, Gosford Hospital and the Q Building in Newcastle CBD, expanded Singapore operations, and student accommodation underway in Newcastle CBD, Gosford CBD and at Callaghan.
Professor Zelinsky said the university has more than 39,000 students and more than 209,000 alumni.
Australian Tertiary Education Commission Chief Commissioner Professor Barney Glover commended Professor Zelinsky's leadership in the university's announcement.
