Newy 87.8 FM – Stevens Group has lodged plans with City of Newcastle for a heritage redevelopment amalgamating the Clarendon Hotel, Fred Ash Building and Bennett Building at 347–365 Hunter Street, Newcastle.

The development application, DA2024/00343, covers the site at 347, 357 and 365 Hunter Street, with the amalgamated site to have access through to Wheeler Place and the Civic Theatre.

According to the Erina-based developer, the multi-million-dollar project includes a full renovation of the existing hotel, a new lobby, cocktail bars and lounges at ground level, and 22 new hotel guest rooms.

Plans also feature a three-level atrium above the existing courtyard with an operable roof. The 1930s structures would be retained, along with the art deco public bar to Hunter Street and the Fred Ash Building's ceilings and fireplaces.

The application is described as mixed use – hotel or motel accommodation and food and drink premises – including alterations, additions and a change of use. It is designated and integrated development requiring Heritage NSW approval under section 58 of the Heritage Act 1977, with City of Newcastle as the consent authority.

The application went on public exhibition from 7 August to 4 September 2024. Stevens Group lists the project's status as ongoing.

The Clarendon Hotel continues to trade, advertising accommodation, restaurant, bar and functions.
