Newy 87.8 FM – City of Newcastle council has ordered a post-implementation review of recent parking changes in the Newcastle CBD, and asked the CEO to consider options to help affected residents.
The decision came at the Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 6 October 2026, dealing with items adjourned from 22 September 2026.
Councillors supported a notice of motion titled "Supporting residents affected by recent CBD parking changes", requesting a review of the changes including impacts on parking turnover and usage.
The motion also asked the CEO to consider options to address impacts on residents in affected areas, particularly those without off-street parking.
The changes extended paid two-hour weekday parking in the city centre, in the area bounded by Darby, Scott, Pacific and King streets, from 5pm to 7pm. Most affected areas switched to four-hour free parking between 9am and 4pm on weekends and public holidays, with the changes rolling out progressively through the second half of 2026.
Under the City of Newcastle Fees and Charges Register for 2026/27, 2P ticket parking costs a maximum of $5.70 per hour, Monday to Sunday including GST. Two additional paid hours between 5pm and 7pm cost up to $11.40 per day.
Paid parking in the city centre operates at various times according to kerbside signage, with payment by meter or the EasyPark app, and parking is free outside posted times.
